The purpose of this Society shall be to bring together those people interested in history, and especially in the history of Verbena, Alabama. Together, we shall seek to preserve the special historic atmosphere and charm of our community through affiliation with state and national historical societies, and we shall seek to achieve the following goals: 1.To speak with unity to those who would seek to change the village in undesirable ways. 2.To encourage that streets, roads, trees, and buildings or structures of a historic nature be restored and/or maintained so as to be in keeping with our purpose. 3.To preserve the community as a residential area and prevent “spot zoning” in the future. 4.To conduct a new survey to include those homes buildings, etc., not presently on the national register. 5.To insure the future of the old iron bridge. 6.To try to save and store any and all materials available to us for use in the repair of existing historic structures. 7.To encourage those who would construct new buildings or homes to conform as closely as possible to the historic flavor of our community and its structures. 8.To see that each house and building on the current and future historical list be equipped with an appropriate plaque indicating its significance and designation. 9.To establish an historical center and archives in which would be placed for all time papers and artifacts solicited from and donated by residents who would care to do so. 10.To educate the public as to historic Verbena and the Verbena Historical Society and to encourage our young people to participate in the Societies endeavors. 11.To seek and secure funds to help us accomplish our goals and to solicit help and publicity from the mass media.
