Wow, this brings back memories. Especially mention of Parker Herman (Nightengale before it was Anchorage Elementary), the guy WE all looked up to, our protecter. He took care of JJ Adams and myself (the runts). We were Ride or Dies, Johnny Big Head as well. Moving from Venice saved my life, I would have been a "Venice Hoodlum" like JJ and the rest. John Pestana is at my surfshop right now and is having a trip down memory lane seeing one of his old best friends from his long ago youth on my computer...
We both recall Lance being one of the best street fighters around back then and I remember watching both John and Lance whoppin' some ass on the northside of the wall a long time ago---keeping out the kooks! I also remember helping Lance fix a stinger single-fin surfboard at my old house so we could go surf the Breakwater ...
Sometimes while waiting for a wave when surfing I reflect on all the drugs/partying goin' on in our youth and the lives lost or changed forever and remember Lance over the years...

Yeah I can confirm what Randy says...

There were some really gnarly drugs floating around us kids in Venice back in the day,
that I believe induced psychosis (& psychotic anti-social behavior).
If prevention or intervention had been timely, well some of these tragedies would not have had to have happened. It makes me sad....

Lance Williams is the one on the left, who later on his his late teens became a member of the "Venice Hoodlums" another one of the street gangs in Venice...Lance became involved in drugs pretty heavily and from what I remeber he ended up robbing his neighbor and killing him, afterwards setting his neighbors house aflame and burning himself also in the process. He's still behind bars as far as I know, a long way away from the days of our youth when I would sometimes surf and hang out smoking pot with him and John Pestana and Justin Zimmerman...
And Tommy Maeta was one of the best kneeboarders ever to ride the Venice Breakwater!

Tom Maeta! - He went to Area D Alternative school on Grandview in Mar Vista.
That was considered progressive education in those days, and you had to go on a waiting list to get in. I was supposedly enrolled in that school too, but the structure was so loose that I got away with just skating or biking through occasionally. (I paid for that later)
This is Cabrillo Ave. near Windward.

I realized that this one, plus the three following, 509. 510, and 489 ANDhttp://www.pbase.com/venicepix/image/45304060 are all from the same negative strip.....so now we know that Karra can brush her hair and eat candy at the same time!
