yeah south side would break when it was a huge storm, so scary! I remember sarlo would drive his mercedes out there to the edge of the cement and park there and go out. only he could get away with that (and only he had that car!).

Hey James that is not Byrons REEF, Byrons Reef is about a hundred yard out past that, (FAR) when the sand would form a cloud break, the rarest of rare spots.. Only Sarlo and Byron have surfed it that I know of..

The problem with posting surf pictures is that there are literally thousands of frames, but I gave most of the prints away. Even with an enlarged version, it's usually very difficult for me to identify the surfer after all these years, and it's nearly always impossible from the existing proof sheets.
Looking at one early gallery [http://www.pbase.com/venicepix/image/44987962 ] you can see what I mean....who are these guys?....and even though these are decent shots, how many visitors to this site will be really interested in them...
The truth is that the great majority of my surf shots are only of real value to the people who were out that day...that's why I took them and that's why I gave them all away....they were of GREAT value to that particular surfer, whether he was a acomplished surfer or a total beginner... a small amount of effort on my part produced something of real value to someone else.
But to sort out those negatives now would involve a great deal of effort on my part and probably produce something of real value only in a tiny fraction of the cases...

Any shots of Byron? After all you guys called it Byrons. I hear he used to be able to catch it way out when it broke big. I would like to see him in action.
Randy Wright and Jaime PerezVBWL 27-Jul-2005 00:11
This is the guy that Jaime Perez and I always referred to "Railgraber"...
I have long ago forgotten his name, but remeber he always charged hard when the southside got big...
Back then, the waves only broke when it got HUGE, unlike today where it breaks on any 2 ft day...
This is the day I recalled when I saw the picture of Jaime in his first truck, hangin' out after we surfed this day, and I was sooo scared that day!!!

Damn that looks fun! I remember days like that, We were taking off about 10 - 20 feet to the right of where the white wash is. It would break all the way to the lifegaurd station in the middle. Got a few about that size (maybe smaller, cuz thats a good size wave) that opened up and I was in the barrel behind the rocks, some scary shit, if you eat shit. it would mush out past the rocks and reform on the inside, you could go right or left at times. You can see it reforming on the inside of that pic
