John Hands' Gallery

In many ways this should have been one of the first galleries. Afterall, I created the collage in the fifth gallery for John...

____The only problem was that I really didn't know if he would approve. There was about a decade in there when he and I would cross the street if we saw the other one coming....(of course, if we both crossed the street that would defeat the whole purpose....but you know what I mean) I guess we both had our reasons but I don't know if I remember exactly what they were....
____When I was back in town in 1989 he let me take the last shot in this gallery, but I don't remember if we actually had a conversation. I couldn't help but notice the thumbs up, though...
____However, John recently left me a a message through the site. He said that he was working at living sober down in the South Bay and he asked me to post some more pix, so here they are...I was certainly happy to hear that he was still with us and I wish him all the best !


I've posted a lot of pictures here. John always liked his pix and he tried to keep them together, but it's been many years and I figure he may have lost a few, so I'm attempting to restock his album...

Most of them were taken by Rick Martin and I've given him credit on each page. When I started doing B&W Rick sold me his enlarger and darkroom stuff for $50. He threw in a lot of his pictures as part of the deal so I feel comfortable posting a few here. [but I certainly wouldn't mind hearing from Rick himself... I'm seeing myself as basically a caretaker here...]

hey babes- does anyone have photos of Lory Mayotte--pro rollerskater-late '78-82- please post-need for book on skater chicks!!!! Lay-back Queen, Marina Skate Park, Venice pav, shots. Thanks for any help!! Exellent site.

i don't know if i ever thanked you for letting me stay in your shack you built in your backyard. It helped me out a lot. Also thanks for all the pictures of me and all the people's pictures of whom i grew up and surfed with from 1971 till 2001..... and after that a few times a summer. The last time was last july. The b.w. north side was the best from the 70's to 85......

I do have pictures of many of you. Most were taken by picture man or rick martin.... and a few by 'man and wife', that is dave scott and little john... That name is what us locals gave them in the 80s. We would see them coming to the beach in the morning to take their morning walk. We would see them coming and say hey "here comes man and wife" Dave, if you're reading this; i hope you two got married! Write me if you want.
