February 1st 1958 on a clear evening two military planes collided over Norwalk California. I was a young boy at the time watching a card game between family members outside on the front lawn when it happened.
Below is a brief summary of the accident on that clear spring evening:
The C-118A departed Long Beach at 19:08 for a flight to McGuire AFB. While climbing under VFR the aircraft collided with a US Navy Lockheed P2V-5F Neptune patrol bomber (127723). The Neptune had just departed from Los Alamitos for a training flight. The C-118 disintegrated and crashed through the roof of a service station. The Neptune crashed into an excavated clay pit on Norwalk Boulevard. Two occupants from the Neptune survived the accident.
In 1964 the American Legion dedicated this memorial at the location of the wreckage of the C-118A.
