From a distance, I saw a large, yellow mass at the base of an oak tree; what the... ?

Laetiporus sulphureus
or chicken of the woods - and by that it means you can eat it;
'tastes good sautéed in butter or prepared in a cream sauce served on toast or rice.'
I'll pass.

a feast for the eyes at least...the name 'sulphureus' does beg the question if that refers to taste...looks like scrambled eggs though, and could be manageable with chop sticks..
