...and Death

Seems a predator has gone after my Swallowtail caterpillar (see 'Next' image).

Similar to Monarchs as well, the Black Swallowtail doesn't taste very good either, hence the body remains for forensic photos.
"larose forest photos" offers the list of suspects.

And one count of robbery - As I've been robbed of a chance to watch it go though metamorphosis.

Unfortunate, to say the least. We have yellow swallowtails here, but I never seem to find any of their caterpillars. ~BV~

alas it has shuffled off its mortal coil, so to speak...with luck you will get another chance at metamorphosis, although such an attractive subject will be difficult to find..

Oh, that is really sad. Butterfly (and moth) larvae are very susceptible to all sorts of problems including being preyed on by some species of predatory stinkbugs, tiny Braconid wasps, and Tachinid flies.
