The houses of Monchique display many of the traditional features of the architecture in the Algarve - white walls, carved stonework, stripes of color around doors and windows - but with their "saia" chimneys (literally "skirt") quite different from those found on this part of the country.

The narrow streets that wind up the steep hillside, revealing fresh and green views at every turn, lend the town a certain exoticism to which camellias, hydrangeas and fruit trees add a fragant suggestion of gradens and orchards. An opportunity to discover an aspect of the Algarve unlike any other.

Monchique is best visited on foot. A walk trough the steep streets of the town centre is rewarded with the views of magnificent hills, glimpsed between houses, and moments of calm in unsuspected corners. At the end, the memory of a hill town with a history and character all its own and a strong desire to return will remain.

Die Architektur der Häuser ist typisch für die Algarve - weissgetünchte Mauern und farbig eingerahmte Türen und Fenster. Nur die Schornsteine unterscheiden sich von denen an der Küste.

Beim Gang durch die steilen, engen Strässchen ergeben sich ständig neue Ausblicke auf die grüne Gebirgslandschaft, die mit ihren Zimtbäumen, Hortensien und Obstbäumen fast exotisch wirkt und eher an einen Park oder Obstgarten denken lässt. Grund genug, sich diesen etwas anderen Teil der Algarve ein wenig näher anzuschauen.

Man sollte Monchique zu Fuss erkunden, denn sein Zauber entfaltet sich erst, wenn man die Strassen bergab und bergauf läuft, zwischen den Häusern hindurch die Umgebung bewundert und die vielen stillen und lichtdurchfluteten Ecken entdeckt. Was bleibt, ist die Erinnerung an ein geschichtsträchtiges, charakteristisches Bergdorf, in das man gerne zurückkehrt.

As casas têm a arquitectura algarvia tradicional nas paredes brancas, nas cantarias, nas manchas de cor das portas e janelas, embora exibam as típicas chaminés de saia, tão diferentes do litoral.

As ruas íngremes e estreitas deixam ver a cada passo novas perspectivas sobre a serra verdejante mostrando um certo exotismo, aumentado pela presença de caneleiras e hortensias, de árvores de fruto, evocadoras de jardins e pomares. É justificação para um prolongado passeio de descoberta de um recanto diferente do Algarve.

Monchique merece ser visitada a pé, pois para apreciar os seus encantos é preciso subir e descer ruas, espreitar horizontes vastos por entre casario, descobrir pequenos recantos de luz e tranquilidade. No fim ficará a recordação de uma vila serrana com história e carácter a que apetece regressar.
