Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, Ridgefield, Washington

Short Eared Owl. Margie and I went to Ridgefield NWR late in the day as we had heard of people spotting these owls at the end of the day. We both took a lot of shots. These guys are not afraid of people, just cautious and they are all over the place. This one is one of the best of the ones we took. Look at the Exif information, but remember that the TC takes a stop so this is at f/8. I took this handheld with shotgun IS. Michel,
You are almost right. Nikon has the 1.5x factor and the Canon has a 1.6x factor making the total, in 35mm land, 300x1.4x1.6 = 672mm. These owls are not very big. I think the owl was about 50 or 60 feet away and the post s/he is sitting on is a 6x6.

You must have been a mile away to get that shot with ummm lets see... 300 x1.5 x1.4 = 630mm - okay, maybe not a mile, but a long way away.

Great shot!!! The soft out of focus foreground brings the eye
to the owl and not to trying to make the eye want to wander.
