Old Ashery at Kirtland, Ohio
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Actually, a reproduction of the original on it's original foundation.
This is the N. K. Whitney Ashery built in Kirtland in the early 1800's.
Asheries were used to extract potash from hardwood ashes in a process that
begins like a big "Mr. Coffee." The refined potash was used in making
glass, soaps and gunpowder. Later, mineable potash was discovered in
the western U.S. and facilities like this became obsolete.
