Yes, that flash of white is a warning to others. This was the only one (of 3) who was standing in good light, and she was the only one who didn't want me around. She moved completely into the sun where further photos were impossible. A little further down the road I spotted these two in winter coats, who seemed very curious about me.

If Jean doesn't mind my jumping in here, your right, Bruce. Sensing danger, the tail raises and often 'twitches' back and forth. It's called 'flagging'. It's instinctive and also warns other deer of possible danger. I'd guess that when Jean moved distinctly, it bolted. Jean? Also, the lack of any antlers at this time of year indicates this is a doe.

Very nice Jean. The white 'edging' outlining the nose, eyes, ears and tail make this a paticularly eye-catching image.
