Joeseph Smith and his followers moved their fledgling Mormon Church from Fayette, New York to Kirtland, Ohio in 1830. Construction on this building, the original "Mormon Temple," was completed in 1836. Persecution for controversial practices (e.g. polygamy) forced them to abandon Kirtland in 1837 and continue their migration westward, ultimately to Utah.
