Greg Wedeking

- Blue -

This is the result of me just playing around. A friend had given me this pen that lights up so that it can be used in the dark. I don't think this is quite what the designers had in mind. :)

This is straight out of the camera with only cropping and the removal of some hot pixels.

Super job. You could get a job as a human sign. When I first looked at it I thought it was a sign. Not only is the picture good technically but your free hand lettering is well formed too.

Thanks Katherine,

I'm pretty sure those are my fingertips you are seeing... especially under the 'e'... I finished tracing the letters about a second before the shutter closed so I had to keep the pen still while waiting for the camera to fininsh... that's why the end of the 'e' is all white...

are those your fingertips I can just barely make out at the end of the E and the bottom of the B?
this is really cool idea. Good job!

Fantastic work, It looks like a neon sign. Your penmanship is better than mine and writing backwards in the air!! Wonderful picture.

A bit more info on how I did this:

I had the camera sitting on a table and manually focused to where I would be sitting. I set the camera for a six second exposure and to be fired with the remote. I turned off all the lights in the room and turned on the blue light. (It's actually a pen with a light built into it , but any light source such as a light stick or LED light would have the same effect.) Once I set off the camera with the remote, I simply traced out the word Blue with the pen in the air. (By the way, you have to write backwards so that it looks correct to the camera.) This probably took about a dozen attempts to get results I liked.

Here is an example of a similar shot that won a POTD over at digitalphotocontest.com about a year ago:

Was it written "in the air" ? Nice technique using nice writing style :)
