Errol

My reflection photographing a large aquarium in a "zoo" run by the children of my kibbutz.

My name is Errol Sapir and I live with my wife on a kibbutz in Israel. I was
born in South Africa 59 years ago and came to live here in 1965. We have
three children two of whom are married (one grandson).

I have been a photographer (amatuer) all my adult life doing everything from
darkroom work to slides. Because of rising costs of colour photography my
film photography took a slow down in the past few years and concentrated
mainly on family photos. Now with the better quality digital cameras my passion is
being re-kindeled. The UZI is my first digital and I bought it after a lot
of research knowing what my needs would be. The closer to the object the
better.

Today I am a network manager in our regional high school where I look after
the 150 computers and 4 servers that run the school. I came to Israel after
high school and started out as a motor mechanic here. That kept me occupied
(mainly as a mechanic of farm machinery) for some 20 years. During that time
I studied History at university and became a teacher at our high school. It
was my fortune to be around when the school was investing heavily in
computers and I was offered to keep them running. At first together with my
being a teacher. The number of computers grew to such an extent that I was
soon full time in that job. I've been doing that for almost ten years. AH!!
It's great when your hobby becomes your work!

The lifestyle we live here on kibbutz is a unique one. I also am in charge
of the internet and computer setup here on our kibbutz, but as this is a
photography group I won't bore you all with details.

I have thousands of slides and photographs which I am investigating ways to
digitze them. It seems the best way is a slide copier for the slides and a
scanner for the photos. This is a major project I'm setting up for myself if
and when I get bored. Can't see that happening now with the UZI to learn and
master and with the support of this group. I can't thank everybody enough
for the info I get here, as well as the "ambiance" that surrounds this group
