Meade County, South Dakota

Bear Butte (Mato Paha) is considered a sacred mountain by the Lakota people.
Bear Butte remains a place for traditional American Indian ceremonies.
Visitors taking the trails on Bear Butte and also from viewing at a distance one may notice bits of colored cloth attached to trees and bushes.
Often called prayer flags they usually are sacred tobacco offerings wrapped in cloth and are a representation of prayers.
