Tomb slab of Nihebsedpepy

Limestone, First Intermediate Period, about 2100 BC
Probably from Upper Egypt

In the later Old Kingdom, particularely outside the area of Memphis, tombs began to be supplied with small stelae rather than large false doors. Variations in style between different towns, particularely in the hieroglyphs, can indicate the provenance of a stela.

This slab shows Nihebsedpepy standing with a prayer for offerings above and in front of him. The colours are unusually bright. Many of the details were painted rather than carved. BA1818
