Thanks for your comment Oleg. My Canon 10D has a function that allows me to view blown highlights and adjust the exposure level until they are gone. If the shadows are then too dark, I usually do a little contrast mask adjustment in Photoshop. This particular image did not need the adjustment.
Making pictures in such lighting conditions (when the sun is direct and the shadows are very harsh) is always difficult, but it seems to me that you mastered the art of exposure very well ! How did you manage to get the correct exposure of that pelican ?

Chuck, I tell you that I don't like zoos, but the few pics you have here are well done. Worth my vote, for sure. You need to keep shooting birds. Try going to birdsasart.com and looking at Art's work. Again, well done.
