A half-hour walk along the riverbank from Cahir Castle is
Swiss Cottage. It's a wonderful example of a "cottage orne" by
John Nash built around 1810 for the Butler family as an artistocrat's "play-house," which allowed the wealthy
to "play peasant" to entertain guests. The cottage fell into disuse for many years, and one section of it was being used by a farmer to shelter a horse before the government bought the property. The house has now been restored and includes reproductions of wallpaper and furnishings. The yew in the right of the photo is estimated to be over 1,000 years old.
