Giant red paintbrush flowers

Lower lake below Donohue Pass view map

A giant red paintbrush flower (Castilleja miniata). Family: Orobanchaceae - was until recently considered to be in Scrophulariaceae. These plants are hemiparisitic, which means they are partly parositic on host plants (e.g. for minerals, water or organic matter) and they photosynthesize as well.
