Burnsland Cemetery was established in 1923 and is 13 hectares in size with 22,061 burials.

By 1923, Calgary was well on its way to becoming a major western centre and the Union Cemetery was running short of space. A new burial place was opened across what is now Spiller Road called the Burnsland cemetery. There are about 21,000 graves in Burnsland, including most of the city's World War I war veterans.

By 1940, most of the burial plots on Burnsland had been either filled or sold, and the City had to once again acquire more burial property. The solution was to move out of Calgary's central core to the North Hill. The new cemetery, called Queen's Park, would later include a section called the Veterans' Field of Honour.
