Mount Armstrong (2823m - 9262ft.)

Kananaskis Country, Alberta

Located on the continental divide in the Upper Highwood River Valley on the Eastern Slopes of Kananaskis Country. Formerly known as Table Mountain because of its broad, flat top, Mount Armstrong was named in 1918 after J. D. Armstrong of the Surveyor General's staff who was killed in action in 1917. Mount Armstrong's west face features a number of vertical ridges which are often highlighted by snow and by sun and shadow. Highwood Pass is the highest paved highway in Canada (2206m, 7239ft.) The road is closed from 1-Dec to 15-Jun. The main reason for the closure extending to June 15 is to facilitate elk, big horn sheep, deer and moose doing their spring grazing during that time. As well, with spring babies being born, predators are attracted to the area. But the road is closed to motorised vehicles only, making this some of the best early season cycling with no traffic. Just look out for animals, they are often on the road.

Beautiful contrast between the green of the valley and the earth face of Mt Armstrong. It is also nicely framed by the hills on either side.

Nice one! Looks beautiful there. I see a lot of pines, and no deciduous trees - must be pretty high where you were.
