Chinook Arch Sunset

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Calgary has somewhat unique weather. It is one of the few regions in the world known for foehn or chinook winds. These are warm, dry winds that are formed when moist air passing over a mountain range loses its moisture and descends down the lee side of the range.

A chinook arch is a cloud formation, where to the west there are almost no visible clouds, to the east of the arch, the clouds are so dense and so strangely textured. They almost look like liquid cotton.

Another interesting thing about the arches are their sheer size. They stretch from north to south pretty much as far as you can see. If you have ever been to Southern Alberta (think pool table flat), that is a long ways indeed.

Anyway, this is taken at sunset, and does show a very small portion of a very interesting phenomenon.

Beautifully done, Gary--the tree in the foreground so dark against the brilliant orange and blue. Congratulations--the most stunning photo I've seen. BTW, there is no such word as "anyways". It's "anyway". And you want to use the singular form of the plural phenomena---phenomenon. Again, well done--you're truly a magnificent photographer and artist!

awesome-we live in Chicago, but as a young teen I lived in Alberta(Brooks), I can recall the most beautiful sunsets ever and the northern lights were unforgettable. Alberta and the Rockies is the beautiful place in the world.

What an incredibly beautiful photo. One would think that a solid blue or solid orange cloud background would be best for this silhouette but this is just awesome.

Lovely photograph! We nearly had a Chinook arch in the NYC/NJ skyline last evening athttp://www.pbase.com/hjsteed/image/33966170 . That magnificent tree really makes your photo very interesting - providing a complex structure in a smoothly textured and glorious colorful background.
