Salamanca was founded in the 3rd century BC by the Vacceos as one of a pair of forts to defend their territory. Over time, the importance of Salamanca as a commercial hub grew. One of the most important events in the history of Salamanca was in 1218, when Alfonso IX created the University of Salamanca. Soon, it became one of the most important and prestigious academic centers in Europe.
