American Coot

Squaw Creek NWR, Missouri

I LIKE THIS IMAGE BECAUSE I WAS VERY SURPRISED TO SEE
ITS FEET.. THEY LOOK LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A WEIRD
SCIENCE FICTION MOVIE.. INTERESTING HOW HE CAN WALK
ON THE ICE..

I ALWAYS THOUGHT OF THE COOT AS KINDA CUTE.. BUT
THAT WAS BEFORE I SAW ITS FEET.... AM SURE THAT
THEY ARE VERY USEFUL IN THE MUD, ON FLOATING
VEGETATION.. BECAUSE THEY ARE USUSALLY SWIMMING
I ALWAYS ASSUMED THEY HAD WEBBED FEET LIKE DUCKS..

CANNOT SEE THE FEET WHEN THEY ARE SWIMMING

Holy Cow, Tom! You're right on in describing the feet as seemingly out of a sci-fi movie. I would have thought they were webbed as well. The claws seemingly indicate more land dwelling in the species' history or lineage.

Great shot! Those lilly pad waking feet work perfectly on the ice,
who would have thought?

Excellent capture of those feet! I've never seen them this closely either.
Love the shot also because he is standing on a shelf of ice! Both shots are Great Tom!

They are rather ugly little creatures aren't the? Nice detail in the feet.

Great catches especially the first one - not very often do we get such a detailed look at their feet!

Very nice series Tom. I too had never seen, nor paid attention to their feet. I really like that first image.
