Avocets and stilts had young chicks in the shallow pond at the marsh last month, and the parents were very protective. The avocets chased the cinnamon teal, mallards, egyptian geese, and stilts, and then the stilts chased the avocets. The water is less than 1/2 foot deep, so watching an avocet "duck" underwater to avoid an attack was pretty funny. Not funny, though, that these shorebirds spend so much time and energy chasing NON-THREATS. They need to save their energy for the predators that come out at dusk....raccoon, coyote, and crow.
