At least 3 rarities seen in Pond E at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, Irvine, CA this week: Dickcissel, Bobolink, and Painted Bunting. Add their secretive behavior, a pond overgrown with grasses and marsh fleabane, and several hundred non-native Scaly-breasted Munias and the result is a challenge for birders. Thankfully, there were dozens and dozens of birders and photographers throughout the day and their observant eyes helped notice when the birds were visible. I now have a photo of a Painted Bunting (and a Least Bittern).
