Sea and Sage Audubon offers a camp for youth about backyard wildlife
Children ages 11 and up learn about common birds (American Goldfinch) and....
Common Insects (Painted Lady Butterfly)...and
Native Plants that attract wildlife (Toyon)
Each day, we take a nature walk around the 300 acre San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine CA
We use field guides to solve identifications of mystery species
We learn about field marks while watching live birds
We sketch from viewing taxidermy specimens
Biologist Trude Hurd taught about common butterflies
She explained butterfly behaviors like basking, nectaring, hilltopping, and patroling
Trude Hurd also entertained campers with a presentation about dragonflies and damselflies
Trude taught 4 common species like this Green Darner which everyone then saw on the daily walk
Back to Natives Director Reggie Durant led us on a native plant scavenger hunt
Reggie shared which native plants were important for wildlife in our yards (buckwheat)
We painted a butterfly clapper during the off-site trip to nearby Mason Park
Everyone loved painting on silk. What a fun week with Audubon Camp!
