In a Navajo legend, the first hummingbird was big, white, and always hungry.
The Great Spirit was displeased that hummingbird destroyed many flowers
during its search for food.
Great Spirit shrunk its size so it would need less food.
Hummingbird got so small, its vocal cords shrank too, and it lost its song!
The other birds felt sorry for hummingbird, and asked Great Spirit
if it could be given colorful feathers to make up for the loss of its size and song.
Great Spirit agreed, and hummingbird now has glorious feathers.
