Who will believe that I spent Five hours at the mall on Memorial Day? True! We headed for lunch at Todai Japanese restaurant when I heard kestrels calling and baby bird sounds. We looked up into the palms and saw the parent kestrels, and in another palm, baby kestrels peering out. We went back to the car for cameras, then called some wildlife photography friends, and proceeded to create a scene as we watched the young birds in their nest. People came over to ask what we were looking at, or slowed their cars and rolled down their windows. Security finally stopped by to say we couldn't photograph people. We explained what we were doing, and Dan showed them video of the female kestrel bringing a bug to the young birds! Then it was okay. I worry, though, that the young birds are fully feathered and ready to fledge (fly and leave the nest), but where will they go? How will the parents still care for them after they end up in different trees of the mall parking lot? What an amazing thing that these two adult falcons were able to raise 5 birds to fledgling right above a busy mall! I wish them well in their journey.
