When my childhood friend wings her way to Southern California for the holidays, we all head to Huntington Beach Pier
Today's treat: a pod of Bottlenose Dolphins
When dolphins exhale, water covering their blowhole shoots into the air
How many are there?
They were traveling south of the pier, but came back around the pier and swam northward
Easier to count when a group was at the surface
At least 8 in one area and several more small groups farther away
When dolphins arch their backs, they are diving deeper and won't be seen for awhile
So we watched Heerman's Gulls...
...and a lot of Surf Scoters like this male...
and even Sandcastle Man!
I left the shells and kept my memories
