Happy belated birthday--what wonderful presents you had! The fledgling is adorable--I do hope that pair has another brood. Thanks, as always, for the other pictures, especially the mountain lion cubs and Red-shouldered hawks. (For me, it's always like opening a birthday present when I get to view your pictures!)
Some days are diamonds. Tuesday was one of those days. Our Western Bluebirds chicks fledged sometime Monday. Early Tuesday I went out to look but saw nothing. I discovered a monarch caterpillar on tropical milkweed, so I was happy that I still had babies in the yard. The female must have seen me, because she flew down for her morning ration of mealworms. Suddenly, a fledgling dropped into the yard! It let me take a couple photos before returning to the neighbor's huge tree. I left for work feeling happy. Then our Audubon Naturalists told me about a Black Phoebe nest with chicks on the back porch of the Duck Club. I took a few photos before the female warned us away. After the school tour, I drove to Irvine Park and was late for a meeting because I stopped to take a few photos of the blue sky and clouds. We got a brief tour of the OC Zoo where we saw the two new Mountain Lion cubs called Santiago and Modjeska (after nearby Saddleback peaks). As I walked to my car, I heard a Red-shouldered Hawk. I went to investigate, and found it eating a MOLE! I was so intent on it that I didn't see the second hawk sitting a few feet away. There was a third hawk in another tree. All of these sightings were in one day right after my birthday! YIPEE! Nature is golden.
