Late morning walk near the Santa Ana mountains
Autumn colors of Audubon's Cottontail
Animal runway, this road most travelled
Counted TWELVE mule deer in this herd (not all in view here)
As morning progressed, reptiles emerged
To sun themselves (Western Fence Lizard)
and Western Whiptail
Armored Stink Beetle (not a bug)
Warm enough for Western Pygmy Blue Butterfly to sun
And sip on Russian Thistle flowers (tumbleweed)
Harvester Ants active
Discarding seed husks outside their burrow
Coyote Brush in flower. California Buckwheat gone to seed in background.
Soft flowers of Coyote Brush (like a coyote's tail!)
Milkweed seeds ready to disperse
Telegraph Weed still with a few flowers
Say's Phoebe perches and looks for prey
Prey like flies and other insects
Say's Phoebe swoops down to capture them
And flies back to another perch to wait for more
