As I mentioned the weather was cold, and this was true in Williamsburg, also. I just couldn't resist stopping to take a photo of this bare tree with a bird's nest, though. It turned out to be one of my favorite photos.

A step back in time...not a car to be seen!

This seemed to be a popular mode of transportation. Carriage rides were sold out both days!

Well, time to visit the Governor's Palace!

Notice the holiday decorations, and the British symbols - lion and unicorn.

This guy was great, as he told us the rules of behavior, whilst visiting the governor.

The back of this building is quite impressive, also!

The village green is much larger than the average town. Re-enactments are held here, but not today.

The weaponry was meant to impress, and is in the entry hall.

These weapons were taken by the patriots during the American Revolution.

A fine dinner appears to be on this table, but, "no" it is not real!

This traditional maze is fun for all. It is more difficult to complete in the summer, when the hedges are more lush.

This kitchen is different from the ones we are used to seeing.

These oxen appeared out of nowhere.

It was hard keeping up with them!

Today, they are actually used to move heavy loads within Williamsburg.

Oh,no! What could this young child and her doll have done to be put in the stocks? note: the matching hoods!

Can you imagine cooking using a fireplace! And we complain, when the microwave breaks!

This is the site of the original Jamestown colony in Virginia. There is a reproduction of the community nearby.

This is the interior of the glasshouse at Jamestown.

This is Monticello. This home was designed by Thomas Jefferson and was his pride and joy.

Monticello looks similar to the library at the University of Virgina, which Thomas Jefferson designed, also.

Jefferson and his wife lived here, while Monticello was being built. Boy, this is small!

Yup, Jefferson even had an icehouse!

"Ice was carted here from a nearby pond and river. As much at 62 wagon loads were required to fill it to the depth of 16 feet."
(Not the same as having an icemaker in your refrigerator, is it?)

This is the entrance to the University of Virginia. To the right and left of the green are the original dorm rooms. There is a waiting list for them.

We're walking toward the library...

Do you notice how similar the design of the library is to Monticello? It was disappointing...the library was closed.

Well, this door is decorated for the holidays, and there is firewood outside.

Many of the rooms displayed flags. Most had a place to leave messages. The students can decorate their room door any way they want. One had ballet slippers hanging from the door.

I wonder if the original rooms have heating or if they rely on fireplaces...hmmmm

We're in D.C. now! This bronze statue can be seen as you leave the Smithsonian metro station. It is in front of the Navy Memorial. It was SOOOOOOOOOOO cold!!!

This pink building was the office of the famous Civil War photographer, Matthew Brady.

This picture of the Capitol Building was taken, as I looked down the street on the way to the National Gallery. It was very far away, actually.

This is the entrance to the National Gallery. As you can see, they had an exhibit on Renaissance women. My favorite painting is there, "Ginevra" by D'Vinci.

The building in the background is the National Archives, and houses the 'U.S. Constitution', etc. Check out the ice skating rink. It was quite a surprise.

The ice skating rink is a pond during the summer. I had never noticed the pond before, but an ice skating rink, well, that I noticed.

I told you it was cold! This was taken from the ice skating rink. You can see the Washington Monument in the background. In reality, I think this is steam escaping from a vent.

This is the entrance to the American History Museum on the mall. Can you see the baricades?

These barricades are at the exit to the museum. There seem to be more of them in town now. They provide additional protection.

Well, time to check out some of the stuff in the museum. George Washington would have hated this statue. He wanted to be portrayed as a common man. It is a neat statue, though.

This is a crystal Capitol Building. I don't think it would last long in earthquake prone California, though.

The only real part of this truck is the license plate, bumper, and tailgate. The rest is a painting.

This is the actual Woolworth's counter from the famous civil rights sit-down of the early 1960's. If you enlarge the photo, you can see what things cost back at that time.
