snake i almost stepped on_MG_0030.jpg

i was walking along the road in Don Edwards park, by the Dunbarton bridge over the San Francisco bay, when i glanced down and saw this snake about 2 feet ahead of me. it was motionless so i hadn't noticed it. it was a cold night snd i guess the snake hadn't warmed up yet.

anyone know what type of snake it is? Thanks!

This is a Gopher Snake, pretty common in the Bay Area. They can put on a convincing rattle snake impersonation if they feel threatened but are not venomous.

I'm not familiar with western snakes but judging from the length, I'd say it's some type of coachwhip. They're extremely fast, as you might find out if you try to catch him. (they're not venomous)
