Batang is a Bornean orangutan. She was born in December 1996 and came
to the National Zoo from Topeka Zoo, on loan from Brookfield Zoo.

She weighs about 82 pounds and has white circles around her eyes.
She is bold and curious, often studying the operating mechanisms
of the doors and walls of her enclosures.

Batang and Kyle came to the Zoo in November 2004 as part of the
American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Species Survival Plan for orangutans.
