Tree Abuse, Destruction and Elimination Gallery: the City of Hialeah, FL

A large team of photographers working for weeks would be needed to document the majority of the tree abuse and destruction in the City of Hialeah, Florida. It has been going on since the mid-60's. Aesthetically, Hialeah is the pits, thanks to haphazard zoning practices going back for decades and the butchering and elimination of trees all over the city. Tree planting and protection receive little priority from the Mayor and City Council, although some planting has been done recently in newly created medians of some major roadways. Unfortunately, a good portion of those will be destroyed by people driving into them, judging from what happened to the tall palms (only 1 is left out of 4 or 5) on W. 12th Avenue next to Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School.

OMG - and here I thought I was the only that noticed this butchering all over the place since I was a little girl. I think more trees die at the hands of Hialeah home owners than due to car accidents. I will never forget the first day I got my house key after purchasing my home in Miami Lakes 26 years ago. An old man (original owners they call them) walks up to me, as I am pruning a bush that I'd been told had termites. I actually wanted to try and keep it. He screams at me: "Hey, go back to Hialeah. We don't kill trees around here!!!" True story. Guess he'd been taking his own pictures around our beautiful city!! Great work but what can you do with these to stop the slaughter?
