Turnouts

Rubber (shown here) or leather waterproof steel-toed boots protect the firefighter's feet.
The rubber boots are usually stored within the 'turned out' pants so that they can be quickly donned, hence the term "turnouts".

I never thought about where the term "turnout gear" originated. My father and husband were both firefighters so it was a common household term. Doug's turnout gear was stored in the basement but did make a venture upstairs when I had to do a bit of a sewing repair! Love your POV here.
