HARVESTMAN ~ These guys are entirely harmless. They are not even really spiders in the true sense of the word, though they are arachnids!
However, they belong to a very different order, that of Opiliones. Like spiders, they prey on other insects or, in some cases, scavenge on dead insects.
Thus, in either case they are beneficial in gardens where, though they can catch insects we want to keep around, they can also prey on ones that we don't want.
And the scavengers amongst them clean up the dead stuff. They don't bite and you can pick them up if you wish!
They usually try to get away and will 'shed' some of their legs hoping to be released!
