Created by Swedish sculptor, Claes Oldenberg, the button was installed in front of the Van Pelt Library on the University of Pennsylvania campus in 1981.
The Button is 16 feet in diameter, weighs 5,000 pounds, and is cast in reinforced aluminum.
Oldenberg once told the Philadelphia Inquirer that "the Split represents the Schuylkill. It divides the button into four parts—for William Penn's original Philadelphia squares."
There is a tradition that it is good luck to have sex under the Button before one graduates from Penn.
Another variation is that a freshmen will fail his first midterm if he walks through the compass on Locust Walk.
The only way to break the curse is to have sex under the Button before the first midterm.
