Ulaanbaatar

The rapidly-growing capital of independent Mongolia is home to half the population of this sprawling, sparsely-populated nation, which shrugged off Soviet-style communist rule in 1990. A recognisable and permanent city only took shape on this site from around 1911, when the Mongols asserted their independence from China's ruling Manchu Dynasty.
