Monumental Mosques and Churches of Istanbul

The Byzantine beauty of Aya Sofya, the Imperial Roman basilica turned Ottoman mosque, compares with that of its grand neighbour, the Blue Mosque and the many others - Beyazit, Suleymaniye, Yeni - which number amongst the greatest landmarks of Istanbul. In the back streets near the old city wall the Chora Church, with its stunning display of Byzantine mosaics, survives as a museum.
