Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo

Stretching along the northern coast of Borneoa and formerly the fiefdom of three generations of 'White Rajahs', Sarawak today forms a state of Malaysia. Indigenous Dayak peoples often still live in rural longhouses, but their headhunting days are behind them. Coastal towns and cities are home to the descendents of Malay, Chinese and Indian immigrants.

Tropical forests provide a habitat for orang-utan and other exotic fauna and flora, particularly within the national parks.

In 2003 I enjoyed the annual Rainforest World Music Festival, staged near the capital, Kuching. Now in July 2023 I returned to take in more of Sarawak's natural wonders and cultural diversity. On this occasion I also spent a few days in the independent and oil-rich sultanate of Brunei which is enclosed by Sarawak's territory.
