Our July 2018 home exchange saw us settled into a 16th-century chalet in the Lötschental, a relatively remote Swiss alpine in the southern canton of Valais. Valais (in German, Wallis) essentially consists of the broad valley of the Rhône, and the tributary valleys which open into it from either side. Seeing more of the Valais always began with a rather hair-raising switchback drive down into the Rhône Valley, then following the valley either east or west (the direction of Lausanne and Geneva). We start with a visit to the delightfully Gallic canton capital of Sion, followed by excursions to the hillside community of Savièse, and to Zermatt.
