Another fine old city of western Russia, lying within a few hours of St Petersburg close to the present-day Estonian frontier. Pskov's white-walled Kremlin is particularly imposing and the nearby Mirozhsky Monastery houses frescoes of rare quality. Just across the Estonian border, on the shores of Lake Peipsi, a community of ethnic Russian Old Believers survives.
