A full day (or two) spent exploring the sprawling Sanssouci Park, whose forests, lawns and manicured gardens provide the backdrop for not one but several palaces created by order of past Prussian kings who ruled from Potsdam, southwest of Berlin, notably the 18th-century Frederick the Great, an avid patron of the arts. Potsdam is largely separated from greater Berlin by the waterways of the Wannsee.
