Every visitor to Bangkok rides the river boats up and down the Chao Phraya,and most will also tour the backwater canals or khlongs. Travelling the Khlong Saen Saep is a decidedly less glamorous experience, the passenger launches spewing out a wake of filthy black water as they roar between the jetties. Engines rev impatiently as commuters scramble on or off - that is, when the boat captain does feel like stopping. The canal's east-west arterial route across the metropolis reveals a slice of life in canalside communities whilst linking several college campuses with the Jim Thompson House and the shopping malls of Pratunam with Banglamphu, near the Golden Mount.
