Crossing the Australian continent aboard the Indian Pacific Railway

In October 2022 we flew to Perth, Western Australia, to ride the Indian Pacific back east across the continent, travelling the Trans Australian Railway standard-gauge line across the desert as far as Adelaide, the South Australian capital. Like its north-south sister service, The Ghan, the Indian Pacific has been reborn as a stylish, full-service excursion journey. Both services have proven so successful that the string of carriages usually extends nearly one kilometre from the locomotive.

Over two days and two nights, the landscape changes from the open eucalypt woodland and wheatfields to the desert scrubland, the treeless saltbush country of the Nullarbor Plain and then the red sand dune country of western South Australia, before reaching the market gardens and commuter towns immediately north of Adelaide.
