Hido-no-Sato, the Hida Folk Village at Takayama, is an open-air museum of regional folk life which deserves a gallery of its own. From 1971 onwards, traditional steep-roofed farmhouses from around the Hida region were moved and reconstructed on this hillside. Artisans and fixed displays illuminate the traditional way of life of the villagers, whose homes were often snowbound. These lifestyles changed rapidly around 1959-1960, as the 'three miracle appliances' - television, refrigerators and washing machines - became widely available, accelerating the drift of people to the cities.
