Mongolia's Gobi Desert

Head south from Ulaanbaatar, and the desert begins... as Lonely Planet puts it, "the Gobi reveals itself in pockets of amazing scenery, bridged by vast stretches of desolation." The towns are tiny, windswept settlements, the roads are typically gravel tracks.
