Ring in the New Edinburgh's New Town remains the world's finest example of Georgian town planning and architecture, but two centuries on, the austere terraced townhouses and the luxuriant private parks wear a comfortable patina. Worlds away from the tenements and 'wynds' of the Old Town, these are the streets inhabitated by the characters created by Alexander McCall Smith, the bars frequented by Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus.

New Town images were taken with Nikon D200 (10 mpx) using RAW format, excepting those by Barbara Game which were captured with a compact Pentax Optio at 2048 px max. dimension. Old Town images were scanned from 35mm transparencies taken in December 2001.
